Learn Something New!

Formal education will make you a living;
self-education will make you a fortune.

Do you like a good challenge?  I love the reading challenges I have found in blog world.  I love the Pin-It Do-It challenges that are new to me also!  My sister and I have weight loss/exercise challenges for each other now and then - a fun way to stay motivated.  So . . . I thought . . . It's a New Year and I'll be 54 soon . . . and 54 is not too old to learn something new!!  Right??   So here it is . . .

I challenge anyone who is reading to LEARN SOMETHING NEW in 2013!  Let's learn 5 new things this year.  Several ideas have come to me lately and I will be sharing them all this weekend.  I still need some time to compile my list.  The rules are this . . . there are none.  Pick five things, big or small, that you have always wanted to be able to do. Maybe it is something that you need to learn to help you with your job or with your life, but also, just think of some things you want to learn for simple fun!

Where did I come up with this hair-brain scheme you ask?  I think it comes from always being afraid to do things in my life.  I'm the girl who cried in the second grade and didn't want to go to school because it was the "play day" at school and we had to run races.  I wore a dress for heaven's sake?? I have never put a worm on a fishing pole. I detassled corn for one day mind you.  I can't dive.  I can't water ski.  Have been afraid of big dogs until well you know Roy.

Then things began to change - I learned that I can drive in six lanes of traffic going too fast.  I learned that I can have a blow out on the interstate and protect myself and my granddaughter from any further harm.  I can raise a big dog, feed and water him, pet him, hug him, and even - walk him. I can ride a bike!   I can manage/supervise 8 women and most days do it without chaos and blood shed.  I can pack up my entire house so it can be moved down the road.  I can hit a golf ball and I can hike in the Rocky Mountains.

This is why I think things have changed - I believe that in my 20's - 40's I was raising my family and keeping up with them - - - I was a great spectator in their lives - - - the way it should be for a mom!!  Loved every minute!   Now in the 40's and 50's I have more time to myself.   I have to entertain myself I guess :).

Always walk through life as if you have something new to learn and you will.

So - please join me in this challenge - there is a lot out there to learn and experience.  Something little or big you have been wanting to do?  Some skill you used to have but has faded away with time??

Brain storm away - and check back with me this weekend as I lay out my plan for the five new things I will learn this year!   Please consider joining in on the fun!

You CAN teach an OLD DOG new tricks!!

Blessings in learning new things!

  1. I love this idea! You know knitting and/or crocheting will be on my list, but I want to try something more daring, also. Probably not skydiving - but I'll be looking for oytdoor challenges. Do I need to list my 5 items in advance or can I just come back and report in as I find them?

    Thanks for getting me motivated.

    1. I think it would be fine to blog about them as they come up. I am going to try to list my five upfront - but I reserve the right to change my mind :)

  3. I'm going to have to think about this and what I would like to learn this year. You can teach an old dog new tricks...right?Thanks for stopping over. My daughter actually lives with us but since she started working full time she doesn't seem to have time for anything else these days. She actually is the manager of a Hallmark store and is a great wrapper, just hasn't found a way to get things done anymore with working full time. She use to clean my house and boy do I miss that! Yes, packages one at a time is the best. We work hard on shopping and wrapping. I love to see what everyone gets. It takes us time but that's our favorite part. Happy New Year to you too!
